2021: GREEN POINT’S YEAR OF GROWTH & INNOVATION
As we look ahead to 2022 and the bright future ahead, we want to reflect on all the accomplishments and momentum from 2021 for our company and the industry.
In Q1, we officially opened our Cannabis Center of Excellence (CCoE) in Hamilton County, Florida. This 30 acre, 52k sf facility was purchased for $750k with $1.5m in cash incentives from Hamilton County’s Economic Development Corporation to retrofit it into what we know will be the most efficient and scalable cannabis oil production facility in the world.
Q2 saw the launch of The GramCo, a cannabinoid brand built by Green Point Research and helping to change the paradigm of the company.
In a new commodity (hemp) with no hedges, brands are your protection against price volatility.
Q3 and Q4 were driven by advancement of innovation and investment in infrastructure to help us scale in 2022 and beyond. We used the Jai Alai fronton to close $6.5M Series A for the company as an opportunity zone business, leading to our first 3 acquisitions, including what our attorneys at GT Law believe to be the first merger of opportunity zone businesses since passing of the TCJA.
2021 Top 3 INDUSTRY THEMES:
Significant M&A Activity | Ecosystem Innovation & Development | Policy Changes
M&A Activity: Forbes’ 2021 year in review cited significant M&A activity in the cannabis space. New York-based Viridian Capital Advisors counted 306 M&A transactions through December 17, 2021, up well over threefold from the 86 recorded for the same period of 2020. Altogether there were 209 recorded transactions in the U.S. totaling $10.1 billion in value – with both the numbers and amount exceeding what was recorded in 2019 and 2020 combined. These acquisitions were not only record-setting, but also illustrative of the robust nature of the cannabis industry. These transactions reflect the intersection with various industries: pharmaceutical, wellness, media, hemp, and the more generalized global supply chain. This is a tremendous sign of things to come for 2022 as the global cannabis marketplace will be a substantial driver of capital and M&A by and through the United States
TECHNOLOGY/INNOVATION/R&D: New cannabinoid discover and development, including the proliferation of delta 8 products across retailers’ shelves were some of the top developments. Additional new product developments included the introduction and expansion of industrial products such as hempcrete and composite auto parts made with hemp. Bloomberg predicted 2022 may see a Hemp Boom, thanks in part to marijuana’s tough year.
POLICY: In terms of federal policy advancement and reform, we saw the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act pass the House of Representatives for the fifth time, and actually be included in more sweeping legislation indicative of the fact that cannabis policy issues are not relegated to second-class status in terms of policy debate. Hemp Industry Daily called 2021 a year of positive CBD policy changes. We agree and look forward to helping cultivate a better future in 2022.
